Start the clock, building a new Web 2.0 prototype (part 1)
I’ve been an eager reader of the TexasVC by Alexander Muse. He correctly writes:
Paraphrasing:
Ideas are worth nothing. Execution is everything
He has an excellent series called the napkin club. The napkin club is a great series that goes blow by blow from idea, through execution, to product.
As I’m an idiot and have no real ideas of my own, I’ve decided to do the same thing. I’ve made the decision to take what little money I have and cobble it into a prototype. The prototype itself will be build using loads of Web 2.0 buzzwords: Ajax, XHTML/CSS, and either Ruby on Rails or CakePHP.
At the moment, I haven’t decided which application framework to build the prototype on. The buzz sides with ROR, but the sheer volume of PHP developers floating out on the ether, and the fact that the vast majority of Web Hosts support PHP 4/5, makes me thing of Cake might be a good call.
So here I am, day one. Idea firmly in hand (no napkins sadly). Documentation and some flows are being generated. And I’ve started talking to potential developers to build it.
This will be an interesting process to monitor.
Oh, what’s the idea? An Ajax CMS tentatively called bliss.
Like I said, I’m not original. However, as they say, its not what you build, its how you build it that matters.

Thanks! Its a daunting process really. I’ve managed loads of projects and loads of developers through the years, but never on my own dime. Its interesting suddenly, when a feature has a dollar sign attached to it, you decide really quickly whether its fluff or not!
Thanks again for the inspiration.

[…] In Part One of my prototype series, I discussed how I was following the model of Alexander Muse to rapidly build a Web 2.0 prototype from scratch. While Mr. Muse started with an idea and a cocktail napkin, I just merrily started with an idea and a mojito. No, mojitos have no correlation on the idea, but I do wish London bartenders would learn how to make this tasty beverage! […]
